Archer Newland faces a immense internal struggle with holding to get married May and being in love with Ellen at the same clip. This struggle is ne’er resolved because all around Newland his friends including Ellen. hold made everything so confusing to him that he ends up experiencing lonely all over once more. Newland doesn’t want to be disgraceful because it wouldn’t be proper to demo his true feelings towards Ellen. However Newland hints them in many ways. When Medora comes up to Newland and references Ellen’s name. as he is chew overing. he is surprised to happen that his bosom leaps. So she is _but she’s got to come place foremost to pick up Ellen.

Ah – you didn’t cognize Ellen had come to pass the twenty-four hours with me? Such fol-de-rol. her non coming for the summer ; but I gave up reasoning with immature people about 50 old ages ago. ” ( page 138 ) Ellen’s aunt tells him that Ellen is remaining at the Blenkers in Portsmouth. “Run down and bring her. like a good grandson. this pretty lady will depict the party to me. she said ; and Archer stood up as if in a dream. ” ( page 138 )

This shows the internal struggle that Newland faces to conceal his feelings for Ellen. Archer stood up as if in a dream” he can’t believe that he is eventually traveling to see Ellen once more and that Medora is inquiring him to travel acquire her. He is in daze! World hit Newland subsequently on “in the pagoda a lady stood. tilting against the rail. her dorsum to the shore. Archer stopped at the sight as if he had waked from slumber. That the vision of the yesteryear was a dream. and the world was what awaited him in the house on the bank overhead” ( page 139 ) This transition shows us imagination of Ellen “leaning against the rail. her dorsum to the shore” . Shows how he is look up toing her looking out at the H2O.

Again he is in daze “ the sight as if he had waked from slumber. That the vision of the yesteryear was a dream. and the world was what awaited him in the house on the bank overhead” he felt like none of this was existent at foremost until world hit him and he was looking at her from a far. He merely couldn’t believe it. Newland puts in his caput that if it is meant to be Ellen will turn around see him and come up with him. “Archer waited till a broad infinite of H2O sparkled between the last reef of the island and the after part of the boat ; but still the figure in the summer-house did non travel.

He turned and walked up the hill. ” ( page 140 ) Newland gave up and turned off. He gave up on waiting. gave up on Ellen. “All dark he lay awake in the large chintz sleeping room at May’s side. watching the moonshine angle along the rug. and thought of Ellen Olenska driving place across the glimmer beaches behind Beaufort’s trotters” ( page 141 ) Newland couldn’t slumber he spent to much clip believing “all dark he lay awake” . He was puting following to May while believing difficult about Ellen “in the large chintz sleeping room at May’s side” “thinking of Ellen” .

This shows the internal struggle he is covering with himself being married to May but in love with Ellen. He stares into the moonshine which shows he is in deep idea about this state of affairs. Newlands internal struggle causes him to lie to May and Mrs. Welland. He tells them he is traveling to pass his afternoon traveling to look for a new Equus caballus to purchase “Archer said that he thought of engaging a run-about and driving up the island to a stud-farm to look at a 2nd Equus caballus for her brougham. ” ( page 143 ) but alternatively he goes to the party.

He was non certain that he wanted to see the Countess Olenska once more ; but of all time since he had looked at her from the way above the bay he had wanted. irrationally and ineffably. to see the topographic point she was populating in. and to follow the motions of her imagined figure as he had watched the existent 1 in the summer-house” ( page 144 ) Newland was funny of where she lived. he wanted to cognize what it looked like “to see the topographic point she was populating in” . Through Newlands internal struggle he feels empty.

We see this when he says “He merely felt that if he could transport away the vision of the topographic point of Earth she walked on. and the manner the sky and sea enclosed it. The remainder of the universe might look less empty. ” ( Page 144 ) He uses imagination to demo how the sky and sea are pin downing the universe “the sky and sea enclosed it” . When Newland visits the party he finds a pink sunshade. He thinks the pink sunshade he found in the Blenker’s garden is Ellen’s. “But alternatively. he crossed the lawn and turned toward the box-garden.

As he entered it he caught sight of something bright-coloured in the summer-house. and soon made it out to be a pink sunshade. The sunshade drew him like a magnet: he was certain it was hers. He went into the summer-house. and sitting down on the rickety place picked up the satiny thing and looked at its carven grip. which made of some rare wood that gave out an aromatic aroma. Archer lifted the grip to his lip. ” ( Page 145 ) Newland is look up toing this sunshade because he feels it was a symbol of something one time close to Ellen.

This causes him to desire to be closer to it and experience closer to Ellen “Archer lifted the grip to his lip” . His description of the sunshade shows how much idea he puts into something that has to cover with Ellen. Throughout these chapters Newland faces these internal struggles and try’s to decide them. The external struggles around him help to do the internal 1s more hard. Newland hides his feelings everyday. We see that deep down indoors he still wants Ellen.
