Phoenix Jackson ; an old Black adult female that partakes on a journey to take medical specialty to her ill nephew that is away in another town. Phoenix is old and through the narrative there are many histories that I think are symbolic to being of age. Bing one with nature Phoenix Jackson is determined to go through the wood to be given to her ill nephew.
The narrative itself was full of symbols. some that where more noticeable so others. Phoenix’s face was said to look like a tree with firing freshness under it. Reasonably much stating she was one with nature. that she was in touch with the natural side of things. And her name is Phoenix which is the same name of the fabulous Egyptian bird that lives for 500 old ages. and so dies but for 500 old ages it regenerates itself. Her name symbolizes in her old age she lives on.
In her old age she is besides in touch with nature as her tree bole like face shows. There are many times she talks to the animate beings: “Out of my manner. all you foxes. bird of Minerva. beetles. doodly-squat coneies. coons and wild animate being! Keep out from under these pess. small bob-whites. Keep the large wild pigs out of my way. Don’t let none of those come running my way. I got a long way” ( 1 ) as in touch she is with nature. there are many cases that the wood showed marks of decease when she seen a turkey vulture sitting on a dead tree. so she seen a scare crow. That besides represents decease. but she ended up dancing with the panic crow like she was dancing about decease.
So far through the journey Phoenix came upon many different things. She even had a symbolic dream ; which had her making for a marble bar from a immature male child which symbolized her life for a longer period of clip. It besides had a simple ground. merely her hallucinating because of old age. But along the manner Phoenix came across a well that she drank from that meant length of service.
A batch of the symbols in the narrative had to make with her age or decease. Soon after she was done imbibing from the spring. a black Canis familiaris came at her grumbling which symbolizes decease one time once more. She hit the Canis familiaris and it ran off. After the brush with the Canis familiaris Phoenix stumbles in falls into a ditch. Where she douses away and has a dream of her stretch and cipher drawing her up. Which symbolizes God looking down at her but does non make for her because it is non her clip to travel to Heaven. After she wakes up from her dream she gets out the ditch and comes across a white huntsman with two grumbling Canis familiariss.
In her whole Journey she had many brushs with symbols of decease. but made it through the wood to acquire the medical specialty to her ill grandson. “Critical treatment of “A Worn Path” mostly has been concerned with thematic reading of the work. peculiarly the story’s racial. fabulous. and Christian motives. ” ( 2 ) Sometimes even called a Christian pilgrim’s journey. because of the times God is mentioned and how she is still keeping on to life. And he traveling through that forest giving herself could travel back to the scarifies Jesus did. But even with those things in it. there were still symbols of the fabulous animal.
As Phoenix walked through the forest she struggled with bad vision and hallucinations but still made it to the infirmary to assist her grandson. “The combined effects of her old age. her hapless vision. and her poetic position of the universe heighten the lyricality and symbolism of the narrative. ” ( 2 ) Which made the narrative more interesting to the readers. Every adversity had a different significance. and brought her closer to her end.
